BOSTON, MA -- Another week behind us, as we continue to move towards the 2017 EHLP Playoffs. This past week featured 14 of the 15 EHLP Division teams in action, and plenty of worthy candidates for our weekly honors.
We're pleased to announce that Russell Shengulette (Northern Cyclones), Asa Palker (New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs), and Alex Henderson (Hartford Jr. Wolpack) have been named the EHLP Stars of the Week.
Also, this week's EHLP Team of the Week is the Vermont Lumberjacks, with an Honorable Mention going out to their goaltender, Eric Roy.
Shengulette and the Cyclones won their only game this past week, knocking off the Walpole Express on Sunday. With the win, the Cyclones gain a little ground in the North Conference standings, as they continue to try to fight their way into the playoff picture.
Shengulette tallied a season-high six points on Sunday, while also picking up his 5th game-winning goal of the season. Through 32 games, the '98 native of North Carolina now has an even 19 goals and 19 assists. With ten games left in the regular season, the Cyclones will continue to lean on their captain down the final stretch.
Palker and the Monarchs won both of their games this past week, improving their overall record up to 22-8-3 for the season. New Hampshire's 47 points have them in 3rd place in the North Conference standings.
Palker's back-to-back three-point games increase his season totals up to 52 points in 29 games for the Monarchs. The '97 forward has been playing very well since the turn of the calendar year, with 14 points in 8 games so far in 2017.
Henderson was another leader by example this past weekend, as the Wolfpack captain led his team to a weekend sweep of the New York Applecore. Just like the Monarchs, Hartford's two-win week keeps them securely in 3rd place in the standings (South Conference).
Henderson's five-point weekend propelled his team, and keeps him towards the top of the league in terms of defensive scoring. With 30 points in 34 games, the native of Connecticut will look to continue to lead his team when they host the New Jersey Rockets on Saturday and the Northern Cyclones on Sunday.
This week's EHLP Team of the Week and Honorable Mention are combined into one section, as Eric Roy anchored the Vermont Lumberjacks this past weekend.
Roy came in with his team trailing 3-1 on Saturday against the Philadelphia Revolution, and his emergence led the way in a big comeback victory for Vermont. The '99 goaltender's performance earned him the start on Sunday, and Roy made 21 saves on 22 shots while leading his team to another victory, this time over the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers.
Vermont continues to sit at the top of the North Conference and overall league standings, and with just six games left on their regular season schedule, the Lumberjacks are closing in on a 1st round bye in the playoffs. The final stretch will not be easy however, as the next four games are all against the Boston Bandits, and then the season wraps up with road rematches against both Philadelphia teams.
